fit info

May 11, 2008

This article appeared in a flyer distributed by a local printing company. Even though this isn't a really a fitness-oriented source, I thought this was a good article for a part of the body that isn't usually discussed in most fitness articles, the eyes. We do after all reley on our eyes in order to do most if not all forms of exercise, so it is worth taking the time to learn good eye health practices

Is there a fitness subject that you would like to know more about? If so, email me at cpkarkow@sportswestreno.com and let me know! I'll be happy to find out some info and post it here!~Christine

The Eyes Have It-in the Workplace and at Home

Appeared in the May 2008 edition of "Basically Business," a publication by Sir Speedy

Whether we're staring at a computer monitor during the business day or focused on some task at home, being intentional about eye health is something most of us fail to do on a regular basis. Here are some common-sense pratices we often overlook:

eye

  • Use the right light. Eye strain is the consequence when the light is too bright or too dim.
  • Regularly "stretch" your eyes. Every 30 minutes or so during your waking hours, roll your eyes to the left and right.
  • Regularly rest your eyes. Especially if you're glued to a monitor or are watching lots of TV, periodically close your eyes for a full minute at least.
  • Use eye drops. Purchase a small bottle of over-the-counter, hypoallergenic drops to soothe stressed-out eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses year-round. Unless skies are heavily overcast, keep those sunglasses on when you're outside during daylight hours. Ultraviolet rays are virtually as damaging in the winter as they are during summer months.
  • Get enough sleep. It's the best remedy for eye strain.
